Carlyon Bay / Crinnis Beach
Carlyon Bay is a series of 3 beaches - Crinnis Beach to the West, Shorthorn Beach in the centre and Polgaver Beach to the East. Once a popular holiday resort, and home to the infamous Cornwall Coliseum sports and entertainment centre, it is now a brownfield site in desperate need of re-development. Although not picturesque with the unsightly steel sheets and boulders outlining the land for future development, launching from Crinnis Beach is possible for the determined kayak angler (see access!) and gives good access to St Austell Bay. The beach is relatively well sheltered from the prevailing swell. Clean ground predominates within St. Austell Bay.
Parking: A large car park is located above Crinnis Beach. Access to the beach is difficult with a walk down around 80 steps required. This would be possible for two determined kayak anglers who could carry the kayaks. The roads down to the beach appears to be closed whilst work has began on re-deveopment but if open makes access slightly easier. Launching is much easier from nearby Polkerris.
Species: Plaice, Gurnards, Whiting and Codling may show to drift fished baits over the clean ground. Small pollack may show around any broken ground. Bass are possible to trolled lures. Mackerel and Garfish in season. Dogfish are likely on bottom baits.
